Should We Even Try? (Jump Start Your 2016)

Can you see it?  Can you smell it?

The time for turkey and football and family and more food is right around the corner!

All joking aside, the holiday season is upon us and with it the ushering in of a new year and quickly broken resolutions.

We talk about them every year.  They’ve really become a joke in our culture.

Do other parts of the world make such a big deal about making grandiose claims to better themselves with little to no substance or commitment behind them?

I wouldn’t lose sleep thinking about that one…

A couple pointers I can give you to move forward in a positive manner would include:

  • First, review and reflect on the last year.  This is a great practice I learned from Jim Rohn.  Reviewing where you’ve been and what you’ve done allows you to invest that experience into the next year (or month, week, day).  Set aside some time to look over your calendars, any notes or journals you’ve collected, and really assess what worked and what didn’t.  Make physical and mental notes as to what you’d like to do more of this year and what things you probably shouldn’t spend as much time on.
  • Write out some goals, but make sure to include your WHY.  Dig a little deeper that the surface goals of losing weight, making more money. etc. etc.  Ask yourself why you truly want these things and why they would improve your life or the lives of your loved ones.  Make these real, make these emotional, and make sure you write them down.
  • Break your big goals down into smaller goals and/or habits.  Losing 25 pounds is an outcome goal (the end result), but what makes up the process goals (the day to day, what will get you there)?  It may include drinking more water, eating more vegetables, eating out less, and not eating after 7 or 8 pm.  We’re all different and work at different speeds, but break down your goals as many times as you need to find the small, usually easy, habits that it will require on a daily basis to reach your outcome goal.
